The pros and cons of Fad Diets

November 27, 2009

Fad diets are diets designed to be followed for only a short period of time.  Fad diets are also diets that quickly become wildly popular, last for a short time, then become a footnote in popular culture. Examples include the grapefruit diet, the South Beach diet, and Jenny Craig. Some of the newly released diets include the Every Other Day Diet and the Cheat Your Way Thin Diet. They have been proven to work quite effectively for fat loss and they both talk about lifestyle diet rather than simple fad. Are they telling the truth or are they FAD as well?

Fad diets are sometimes known as food fad-ism. Any time one particular food suddenly becomes a superstar, that’s a food fad. These generally have some common elements, including:

-    The food, or some ingredient within it, is thought to have amazing powers.
-    Other foods are removed from the diet because they have negative properties that should be avoided.

The Atkins diet displays the characteristics of one of these fad diets. In Atkins carbohydrates must be avoided because of their negative characteristics. At the same time, carbohydrates are the miraculous element — actually the lack of carbohydrates because it creates a metabolic state in which the body burns fat at an amazing pace.  Although it is a long-term diet, it did have short phases during which carbohydrate cutting was taken to the extreme. But Dr. Atkins did intend that people could eat this way for the rest of their lives.

As with many fad diets Atkins rose quickly and fell just as quickly. For a number of years anyone who thought of dieting thought about the Atkins diet .  Every movie star, singer, and sports figure claimed to use the Atkins diet when they needed to lose weight. But after the death of Dr. Atkins, the diet became much less of a household word.

There are many risks associated with fad diets.  Even a seemingly healthy diet like the Subway diet could be dangerous. It revolves around the extreme weight loss case of Jared who ate Subway sandwiches and baked chips to lose over 250 pounds in the span of a single year. Jared’s diet was severe — going down to 900 calories a day from over 10,000.  Doctors agree that weight loss on that scale isn’t healthy. The diet did include many positive aspects such as exercise, like walking. Let’s talk about workouts. The newly released Warp Speed Fat Loss program claims to melt MORE than 2lbs of fat per week. Would one call it a Fad WORKOUT?

Beware of fad diets. You’re better off learning how to eat well on an everyday basis and maintaining a program of rigorous exercise.
