Does it Matter Whether I Purchase a “.com” Or a “.info” Domain Name?
May 27, 2009
I have heard both sides of this controversy from various marketers over the years, but predominately the answer most will give to that question is yes, it does matter. That for some reason, Google gives more “love” to a .com or even a .org domain than to a .info (or even .net) domain.
The people that have told me this say that it is undeniable when you enter a search phrase into the search engines, the top sites are almost always going to be .com or .org.
Yes, this is generally accurate, however I have another side to that statement that you must consider when choosing which extension you should purchase.
There are thousands, hundreds of thousands more .com and .org websites on the world wide web than there are .info. This statement on it’s own could explain why the search results generally have .com and .org domain names in their top listings. This does not mean that it is not possible that the search engines prefer .com or .org, I am just bringing up a point. That is that .com and .org domains should be in the top of the search results most of the time, there are 10’s, even 100’s of thousands more websites with a .com or .org domain extension.
I have mostly .com domains. I prefer those because when people enter domain names into their address bar they tend to type .com. So, by just purchasing a .com you will ensure they go to your website. If the website you were looking for in a .com has a .info available and you buy it, then when the person goes to enter it into their address bar, chances are that unless they were really paying attention, they will be entering in .com. Therefore, instead of arriving at your website, they would land on someone else’s.
I do have some .info extensions however and as far as a search engine optimization stand point I have found them to rank in the search engines equally as well as a .com website. Therefore, for search engine optimization purposes it does not seem to matter which extension you choose. The search engine optimization side comes down more to your keyword phrases and links than to the extension you buy.
Therefore, when purchasing your domain it comes down to what you prefer. Does it matter to you whetherthey unintentionally enter .com instead of .info (or even .net)? Your answer to this question will help you chose which domain name extension you buy.
