Everyone has their personal favorites but a comfort food recipe is often bulky food that fills you up, such as a stew, casserole or soup filled with vegetables. When the wind is howling or you have just struggled to get home in the snow, a light snack will not do! In Britain, Stewing Beef and Suet Dumplings hits the spot, cooked slowly with root vegetables and onions in rich gravy. The Canadians who live in Quebec Province favor Poutine, which is French fries with cheese curds and gravy.

The British are also very fond of curry and Asian restaurants and take out are a great source of comfort food recipes. In fact, the winner in a poll of Best British Dish was Chicken Tikka Masala! Fish and Chips is an older tradition and every high street has one or more fish and chips shops with mainly haddock or cod, fried in batter. Bangers and Mash is a constant and translates as Sausages with Mashed Potato.

Steamed puddings are another UK preoccupation, such as Spotted Dick, a suet pudding with currants. Other sponge puddings use rhubarb, ginger, treacle or chocolate and all are served with lots of custard. For a real treat, there is always Bread and Butter Pudding with Bailey’s Liqueur.

Of course, the universal choice of comfort food recipes is chocolate. In all its forms, it never fails to please, whether in a pudding, a hot chocolate drink or just on its own. Chicken Soup too seems to cross borders and is often given to invalids and people convalescing from illness because it is nourishing and easy to digest.

In the US, chocolate brownies and cheesecake does the trick. Also, ice cream is often resorted to in order to mend a broken heart! The smell of home baked apple pie reminds everyone of growing up. Macaroni Cheese, using Elbow Macaroni and Cheddar Cheese Sauce baked in the oven, is another popular comfort food recipe.
